Every Car Matters: How SAP and BMW Group Are Redefining Production Logistics

How SAP and BMW Group Are Redefining Production Logistics

Every 57 seconds, a new vehicle rolls off the BMW Group assembly line in Regensburg, Germany. That’s over 1,500 cars per day and about 350,000 per year. Each of them requires tens of thousands of parts to be delivered to the production line at exactly the right time.

In an environment where even a few minutes’ delay in supply can halt production and cost hundreds of thousands of euros, logistics efficiency is critical. Analysts estimate that the automotive industry loses up to 5% of profits annually due to inefficient logistics processes.

This is why BMW Group has embraced a large-scale cloud transformation with SAP S/4HANA.
The move to the cloud is not just a technical upgrade—it is a strategic revolution that enables transparency, process standardization, and the use of artificial intelligence to manage a global production network.

Standardizing Processes: A New Level in Logistics

The first step of the transformation was the development of a unified PKT (Parts Chain Template) in SAP S/4HANA, covering the full lifecycle of parts supply management:

  • supplier ordering,
  • receiving and warehousing,
  • delivery to the production line,
  • quality control and maintenance.

For the first time in BMW Group’s history, all logistics processes were brought under a unified management platform. This reduces errors, saves time, and standardizes operations across the company’s global plants.

A Borderless Team

The project’s success was made possible through close collaboration between SAP and BMW. For seven years, the companies worked on joint innovations, continuing a partnership that has lasted for more than three decades.

Dozens of teams—from Customer Services & Delivery to Product & Engineering—worked together with a single goal: creating a new digital logistics standard that covers every stage of production, from the press shop to final assembly.

“We have always emphasized: every car matters. This is not just about IT solutions—it’s about the factory, the people, and the outcome,” said Carola Schoenfelder, Lead Expert at SAP.

Transformation as “Stairs,” Not a “Wall”

The update affected more than one-third of the Regensburg plant’s employees, who now work daily with SAP S/4HANA modules, including SAP Transportation Management and SAP Extended Warehouse Management.

To minimize risks, the transition was gradual. The team approached it as climbing steps, not scaling a cliff. On-site support points provided workers with real-time assistance.

Experience from the MINI plant in Oxford served as a “training ground,” helping to avoid mistakes ahead of the larger-scale rollout in Regensburg.

Tangible Results Within Six Months

Only six months after the go-live, the benefits are clear. SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition has transformed daily operations:

  • SAP Extended Warehouse Management provides new data for process optimization.
  • Internal transport routes are reduced, saving thousands of kilometers annually.
  • Standardized processes make it easier for employees to switch tasks or even move between plants.
  • Real-time transparency and control reduce the risk of disruptions and component shortages.

“Global digitization of our logistics significantly enhances transparency and standardization. This allows us to respond faster to demand changes or supply chain disruptions,” explained Michael Nikolaides, Head of Production Network & Logistics at BMW Group.

Preparing for the Future with AI

Standardized cloud solutions lay the foundation for the next stage: widespread adoption of artificial intelligence. Unified data and processes make it possible to train algorithms on real scenarios and scale solutions across all plants.

“With SAP S/4HANA, we have built the foundation for AI in BMW Group logistics. This substantially increases automation and flexibility,” noted Alexander Buresch, CIO of BMW Group.

Joint Innovations for the Industry

BMW and SAP are not only solving internal challenges—they are setting a new standard for the automotive industry. Other manufacturers adopting the same model will benefit from SAP’s continuous updates, while BMW will gain from a broader ecosystem.

“Our project with BMW in Regensburg proved that even the most complex production transformations can be implemented without stopping the assembly line. And this is only the beginning: this summer, we will extend RISE with SAP to BMW’s main plant in Munich,” emphasized Hendrik Haase, Senior Vice President SAP Central and Eastern Europe.

Beyond a Technical Upgrade: A Strategic Shift

The Regensburg plant’s transition to SAP S/4HANA is more than a technical upgrade—it is a case study of how digitalization creates new business value through:

  • process standardization,
  • increased transparency,
  • cost reduction,
  • readiness for the AI era.

Every car rolling off the assembly line today is the result not only of engineering excellence but also of a profound digital transformation.
